THE BAMIN BOARD OF DIRECTORS
L to R: Dave Cort, Pedro Orantas, Henry Hitz, Linda Nackerud, Newt McDonald, Ethel Seiderman, Mario Castellanos, Ray Capper HISTORY BAMIN was formed in 1993 when BAMIN’s director, Stan Seiderman, was asked to expand his work with fathers at the Fairfax-San Anselmo Children’s Center into a larger arena. Dr. James Levine, Director of the Fatherhood Project, knew of Seiderman’s success in getting fathers and other significant men in the lives of children involved in the children’s center by meeting monthly, planning activities and sharing information and resources to improve the lives of the families. The work spread to other child development agencies and with a grant from the Packard Foundation allowed BAMIN to expand further. In 1996, grants from the Hewlett Foundation enabled BAMIN to expand to fifteen agencies. During that time, the agencies met on a bi-monthly basis to share resources, create a Male Involvement Curriculum used in Community College Early Childhood Education classes, and sponsor five annual conferences for fathers and professional practitioners working with children and families. A main goal of the curriculum, the conferences and the Network meetings was to continue to work on changing the culture of agencies to be inclusive of all men involved in the lives of children, including fathers, staff and other significant men in the lives of children. After Stan’s passing in January 2005, the BAMIN board members met and voted to continue his work under the leadership of Ray Capper, with Parent Services Project, inc. serving as the fiscal agent. BAMIN remains committed to providing support to men working in the field of child development and to providing technical assistance to schools and childcare centers that want to overcome the barriers to male involvement.
